Waubesa Wetlands State Natural Area

Writer's picture: Emma HalversonEmma Halverson

This was definitely an adventure! Off of Lalor Rd, there is a small parking lot for about two cars and an entrance to the Waubesa Wetlands. We had this recommendation from a friend, so we figured we better take a visit! The whole area contained a lot of wildlife and great views of Lake Waubesa, and there are even areas to walk down to the wetlands. I'm not going to lie, this area was not very well marked, so we spent a considerable amount of time lost. But I am here to share my mistakes so we can all learn from them! There are really two different trails that we found, and one was a loop through the prairie (this one was the one that offered great views of the wetlands and some long-horned cattle (I don't even know if that's their name haha)) and another out and back that ended at Swan Creek. The prairie trail would be very hard to hike in the summer because the trail was made up of matted down, dead grass. There isn't a map of the trails, so I will just do my best to explain in pictures below. Also, this place would be great for ham mocking! It is very secluded and we only saw one other person on the trail. If you are coming to hammock, I would continue all the way straight back on the trail until you hit the forest and head in there. If you are looking for well traveled path, I would not recommend this one. As for where to find the trails, there aren't any signs for the trails, so I will describe them. When you enter the parking lot, if you are looking for the loop, stay right of the tree line and go by the big sign talking about the wetlands. If you are looking for the out and back trail, stay left of the tree line and turn left when you see some stones stacked on top of each other.

rating: 5/10

The trails were not marked at all, and the one we went on seemed to be made by other hikers.
